What does a Norway road trip cost?
Ferries, tolls, fuel, motorhome parking, the visitor levy and food: what a Norway road trip costs in 2026, every figure from an official source with its date.

The short answer (status: October 2026): the fixed costs of a Norway road trip are ferries, tolls and fuel, and all three can be calculated before you leave. On our worked example, a 10-day, 822 km fjord route in a campervan under 6 m, they come to about NOK 1,900 (around €180) in September 2026. Beds and food are the open lines, and they depend on how you travel. Every figure below comes from an official source, opened on 7 October 2026 and listed at the end.
The cost lines at a glance
| Cost | What decides it | Can you know it in advance? |
|---|---|---|
| Ferries | Vehicle length, crossing, payment method, summer rates | Yes, from the official price search |
| Tolls | Toll points on your route, weight, fuel type, agreement | Yes, from each toll company's page |
| Fuel | Distance, your vehicle's consumption, the pump price | Roughly; prices change daily |
| Nights | Campsite, motorhome park or hotel | Only per place |
| Visitor levy | Type of accommodation, municipality | Yes: not on your own motorhome |
| Food | Your shopping habits | As a ratio to your home prices |
Ferries: priced by length, halved with an agreement
Norway's road ferries in the AutoPASS scheme charge by vehicle length, including the driver. The 2026 national fare table includes 12 % VAT and runs from zone 1 (a short crossing) to zone 113. In every zone, the 6.01–8 m class pays more than twice the under-6 m fare. In zone 1 a vehicle under 6 m pays NOK 51 and one of 6.01–8 m pays NOK 117. In zone 95, Bodø–Moskenes to Lofoten, the same two classes pay NOK 605 and NOK 1,302.
How you pay changes the price. With an AutoPASS tag and the additional prepayment agreement, private customers get 50 % off. A tag alone gives 10 %. Paying by card on board gives no discount. Without any agreement the invoice arrives by post with a fee of NOK 35 including VAT. The prepayment for vehicles up to 8 m is NOK 2,200 in 2026. That is credit your fares are drawn from, and any positive balance is refunded 21 days after you terminate the agreement.
Summer rates. In 2026, Møre og Romsdal and Nordland charged higher summer fares on listed routes from 1 May to 31 August, Trøndelag from 1 June and Troms from 20 June. A vehicle is exempt on a route after more than four trips (Møre og Romsdal, Trøndelag) or six (Nordland, Troms) on that route, if it is linked to an AutoPASS or FerryPay agreement. Bodø–Moskenes is not on the 2026 summer list. Eidsdal–Linge and Åfarnes–Sølsnes in Møre og Romsdal are. The summer prices themselves are not in the table we read, so we do not print them.
| Crossing (2026, full price) | Under 6 m | 6.01–8 m |
|---|---|---|
| Mannheller–Fodnes | NOK 69 | NOK 155 |
| Eidsdal–Linge (from 1 Sep) | NOK 81 | NOK 180 |
| Åfarnes–Sølsnes (from 1 Sep) | NOK 88 | NOK 193 |
| Bodø–Moskenes | NOK 605 | NOK 1,302 |
| Andenes–Gryllefjord (Svipper) | NOK 925 | NOK 1,985 |
Tolls: cameras, rate groups and a 20 % discount
AutoPASS states that all vehicles must pay road tolls in Norway. A foreign vehicle without an agreement or registration is invoiced, and a fee for looking up the owner may be added: AutoPASS lists EUR 5.10 for Germany (correct as of 1 May 2025). With a tag and a user agreement you get 20 % off in most toll projects. A vehicle whose Euro emission class or fuel type is not registered is charged the highest rate.
Weight matters. Rate group 1 covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg and all vehicles in category M1. A motorhome over 3,500 kg in category M1 stays in rate group 1 only with a tag and a valid agreement; without them it is billed in the heavy rate group 2.
Three examples of what a single passage costs a light vehicle (rate group 1) in 2026:
| Toll point | Without agreement | With agreement |
|---|---|---|
| Hardangerbrua (Rv. 7/Rv. 13), from 22 May 2026 | NOK 143.00 | NOK 114.40 |
| Bypakke Bergen, petrol or hybrid, off-peak | NOK 32.00 | NOK 25.60 |
| Bypakke Bergen, diesel, off-peak | NOK 38.00 | NOK 30.40 |
| Bypakke Kristiansund, per point | NOK 34.00 | NOK 27.20 |
Hardangerbrua charges in both directions. In Bergen you pay once if you pass several stations within 60 minutes, and the rush-hour rate is double: NOK 64.00 for petrol without an agreement.
Fuel: prices vary daily, so use the official average
Pump prices change daily, by station and region, so no single figure is "the" price. Statistics Norway (SSB) publishes a monthly average. For August 2026, the latest month in its table on 7 October 2026, it gives NOK 19.42 per litre for 95-octane petrol and NOK 21.48 for diesel. In June 2026 the figures were NOK 18.43 and NOK 18.81. Use the SSB figure for budgeting, and expect the pump to differ.
The formula: kilometres × your consumption (litres per 100 km) ÷ 100 × price per litre. Only your own vehicle's consumption is a real number. Ours in the example below is an assumption.
Nights: municipal motorhome parks publish prices, campsites set their own
Campsites are private businesses with their own prices, and no official source publishes them for the whole country, so we give no national figure. Some municipalities run motorhome parking and publish a price:
- Bergen: the motorhome car park at Bergenshallen costs NOK 375 per 24 hours (page updated 17 August 2026). It has emptying of grey water, toilet and rubbish, with power at some places but no toilets or showers.
- Kristiansand: Kongsgård motorhome parking costs NOK 320 per 24 hours in the summer season and NOK 160 in winter (1 November to 28 February), with power, water, a dump station and wifi.
Watch for prices published without VAT. In 2026 Moskenes in Lofoten lists car parking at Reine ytre havn at NOK 36 per hour, up to NOK 499 per 24 hours, both excluding VAT.
The visitor levy: not on your own motorhome
Norway's new visitor levy act (besøksbidragsloven) came into force on 1 July 2026. It lets municipalities with a particularly heavy load from tourism charge an overnight levy of 3 % of the price of the stay, excluding VAT. The government says municipalities can start collecting it from 1 January 2027 at the earliest.
The government's Q&A is explicit about campers. Overnight stays in your own caravan, motorhome or tent are not liable, because campsites and motorhome parks that rent out ground short-term fall outside the act. A cabin on a campsite is liable. For a 2026 trip the levy costs you nothing. From 2027 it matters only for hotels, cabins and similar rooms, and only in municipalities that adopt it.
Food: about 30 % above home prices
We do not print a supermarket basket, because one shop's prices on one day prove nothing. Eurostat's comparative price levels are a better guide. For food and non-alcoholic beverages in 2024 (EU average = 100), Norway stood at 131.2, Germany at 102.7, the Netherlands at 98.9 and Lithuania at 101.2. By our arithmetic, food in Norway cost about 28 % more than in Germany, 33 % more than in the Netherlands and 30 % more than in Lithuania.
Budget it like this: your normal weekly shopping bill at home × 1.3. Restaurants are a separate decision and not in this estimate.
A worked example: 10 days, 822 km, September 2026
The route is our Western fjords: 10-day road trip, Bergen to Kristiansund, 822 km by the guide's own measure. The vehicle is a diesel campervan under 6 m and under 3,500 kg. The month is September 2026, outside the summer rates.
| Line | Without agreements | With tag, agreement and ferry prepayment | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 ferries (Mannheller–Fodnes, Eidsdal–Linge, Åfarnes–Sølsnes) | NOK 238 | NOK 119 | AutoPASS price search |
| Bergen, 2 passages, diesel, off-peak | NOK 76 | NOK 60.80 | Ferde, Bypakke Bergen |
| Kristiansund, 1 passage | NOK 34 | NOK 27.20 | Vegamot |
| Diesel: 822 km × 9 l/100 km × NOK 21.48 | NOK 1,589 | NOK 1,589 | SSB, August 2026; consumption is our assumption |
| One night, Bergen motorhome parking | NOK 375 | NOK 375 | Bergen kommune |
| Visitor levy | NOK 0 | NOK 0 | Regjeringen Q&A |
| Known total | NOK 2,312 | NOK 2,171 | |
| In euros (1 EUR = NOK 10.778, 6 Oct 2026) | about €215 | about €201 | Norges Bank |
Ferries, tolls and fuel alone come to NOK 1,937 without agreements, about €180. The tolls are the ones the guide identifies on this route. If you drive the same route between 1 May and 31 August, two of the three ferries cost more.
What is not included, and why:
- The other eight nights. Campsite prices are set by each campsite, and we found no official source to cite.
- Food. Use the Eurostat ratio above on your own spending.
- Getting to Norway. The ferry or the drive from home depends on where you start: see Ferry to Norway.
- Optional extras, such as the private road up to Dalsnibba, fjord boats and the Flåm Railway.
- Vehicle hire, insurance, wear and parking in towns.
How to cut the fixed costs
- Open a ferry prepayment agreement if you take more than a couple of crossings: it halves every fare, and the unused balance comes back.
- Get a tag for 20 % off tolls, and, for a motorhome over 3,500 kg, to stay in the light rate group.
- Measure the vehicle with the bike rack on. Crossing 6 metres more than doubles the fare in every zone of the 2026 table.
- Avoid summer rates in Møre og Romsdal, Nordland, Trøndelag and Troms if your dates are flexible.
Plan it

FAQ
How much does a ferry cost in Norway?
It depends on the crossing and the vehicle length. In 2026 a short crossing costs NOK 51 for a vehicle under 6 m at full price, and Bodø–Moskenes costs NOK 605. A private prepayment agreement halves both.
Do I pay the visitor levy in my own motorhome?
No. Under the 2026 rules, overnight stays in your own caravan, motorhome or tent are not liable.
What is the price of diesel in Norway?
It changes daily. Statistics Norway's monthly average for August 2026 was NOK 21.48 per litre for diesel and NOK 19.42 for petrol.
