This is the route most people imagine when they think of Norway: steep fjords, waterfalls, the hairpins of Trollstigen, and a road that skips across the ocean on bridges. It is also the route where a bad plan costs the most, in long queues, full campsites and a mountain pass that has not opened yet.
The guide runs from Bergen through Voss and Flåm to the Sognefjord. It crosses the Sognefjellet road, the highest mountain pass in Northern Europe, down to Lom, then goes to Geiranger, over Trollstigen and out to the Atlantic Road. It is ten days because anything shorter turns this landscape into a blur through a windscreen.

Questions
When are the mountain roads open?
Sognefjellet and Trollstigen close in winter and usually open in spring. Opening dates change every year with the snow, so the guide prints the opening dates of recent years and shows how to check the current status before you set out.
Is this route suitable for a large motorhome?
Most of it is. The guide flags the stretches where length limits, hairpins or narrow passing places make a big vehicle hard work, with alternatives.
Can I drive it the other way round?
Yes — start in Kristiansund and end in Bergen. It works the same way; the one thing the direction changes on the road is Trollstigen, whose hairpins you then climb instead of coming down.
