A turf-roofed mountain cabin in Innerdalen under a pointed peak

Central Norway — Trøndelag

Trøndelag is where most road trips hurry through on the way north. It deserves better. There is a proper city in Trondheim, a long, quiet coastline and mountain country where a small hut may be the only building for kilometres.

Central Norway, the region of Trøndelag, links the fjords of the west with the long road north. Trondheim, Norway's third city and its historic capital, is a natural rest day on any long route. Its cathedral and the old wharf buildings along the river are worth a morning.

Beyond the E6

The main road north, the E6, is efficient and unremarkable. The better routes leave it: out to the coast and the islands of Hitra and Frøya, or east into the mountains around Tydal and Røros, where the landscape opens into wide plateaus with small mountain huts.
