Camper rental in Norway: companies, pick-up points & prices
Which rental companies have depots in Norway, what mileage, excess, tolls and extras cost, and what to check about your licence and at pick-up.

Renting a campervan in Norway sounds simple: fly into Oslo or Bergen, collect the van, drive. In practice the offers differ a lot – in excess, tolls, one-way options and whether your licence even covers the vehicle. We read the terms of the rental companies with depots in Norway on their own websites (as of 24 September 2026).
Rent in Norway or bring your own camper?
If you drive up from Germany or the Netherlands in your own camper, or one rented at home, you pay the ferry for the vehicle and everyone in it, both ways. One example: Color Line lists a camper package on Kiel–Oslo from €333 per person, for two people in a motorhome up to 5 metres long and 2.55 metres high; bigger vehicles cost extra. Fjord Line lists Hirtshals–Kristiansand from €96 per person (Fjord Club price, two travellers, motorhome up to 6 metres).
Renting locally makes sense when your time is short or you want to start in the north, say in Tromsø or at Evenes for Lofoten. Your own vehicle gives you more freedom with a dog, kit and trip length. If you rent privately at home (through Goboony or PaulCamper, for example), check that the insurance covers Norway and ferry crossings – more on that below.
Campervan hire in Norway: who has depots where?
| Company | Depots in Norway | One-way | Mileage | Excess (basic cover) | Deposit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| McRent | Oslo (Nannestad), Bergen (Fjell), Evenes, Nordkjosbotn | only by separate agreement | all included (except some promotions) | NOK 15,000 | NOK 15,000 |
| roadsurfer | Oslo (Jessheim), Bergen | no, same depot | unlimited | €3,000 (Basic) | NOK 15,500 |
| Indie Campers | Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Tromsø | yes, fee shown at booking | contradictory (see below) | €2,500 (Basic) | €500–2,000 by cover plan |
| Touring Cars | Oslo (Jessheim), Tromsø | yes, surcharge from €900 | unlimited | NOK 30,000 (TC Basic) | pre-authorisation of the excess amount |
- McRent's Norwegian terms allow travel within Europe. Dogs are not allowed at the Norwegian depots. The NOK 15,000 excess can be reduced but not removed, and interior damage and misuse (awning, tanks) are not insured.
- roadsurfer currently offers one-way rentals only in the USA, Canada and on "Rallye" deals. In Norway you return the van where you picked it up.
- Indie Campers says "Unlimited mileage" on its Norway page, but the "Responsible Use Policy" in its help centre gives 420 km per night for the Norwegian depots and extra kilometres from €0.30. Get the mileage rule for your booking in writing.
- Touring Cars allows travel within Finland, Norway and Sweden without special permission.
If you prefer to compare in one place: Motorhome Republic is a broker that lists McRent, Touring Cars, roadsurfer and Indie Campers among others, with pick-up points from Kristiansand to Kirkenes, including Bergen, Bodø, Stavanger, Trondheim, Tromsø and Lofoten.
To see what's available for your dates, try the campervan comparison at Motorhome Republic or book directly with roadsurfer in Oslo and Bergen.
Driving licence: the 3.5-tonne question
In Germany, a category B licence covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass; above that you need C1 (up to 7,500 kg).
A new EU directive is meant to raise the limit for motorhomes on a B licence to 4.25 tonnes – but only once it is written into national law. Until then, 3.5 tonnes applies.
What the rental companies ask for:
- McRent has a premium group over 3.5 tonnes: minimum age 25, licence held for at least 3 years, category C/C1. For all other vehicles: 21 years and one year's licence.
- roadsurfer needs a licence for cars up to 3.5 tonnes (category B), minimum age 18 and one year's driving experience.
- Touring Cars asks for category B (up to 3,500 kg), and in Norway a minimum age of 25 with two years' driving experience.
- Indie Campers gives 21 on its Norway page and 18 for Europe in its help centre. Ask before you book.
Over 3.5 tonnes, Norwegian tolls change too: such vehicles generally fall into rate group 2. Privately used motorhomes don't need a compulsory tag, but vehicles registered to a business do – and a rental camper is normally registered to the rental company. We found no official statement about rentals; ask your rental company.
Winter tyres and snow chains
Norway has no blanket winter-tyre law for cars, but the rules are strict: from 1 November to the first Sunday after Easter Monday you need at least 3 mm of tread, and in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark from 16 October to 30 April. You may not drive on winter roads on summer tyres. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must carry snow chains when driving on roads with snow and ice.
roadsurfer fits all-season tyres with the snowflake symbol in winter; in summer part of the fleet runs on summer tyres. Snow chains can be hired in Oslo and Bergen from €49 per trip. Touring Cars lists winter tyres as included. McRent charges a compulsory "Winterservice" of NOK 970 per rental from 1 November 2026 to 11 April 2027; what it covers is not published. At Indie Campers the help centre and the Tromsø page disagree (the Tromsø page says studded tyres October–April) – ask if you rent in autumn or spring.
Taking a rental camper on a ferry
The companies handle ferries differently:
- roadsurfer allows ferries, but its terms are clear: damage to the vehicle while using ferries or car trains is not insured.
- Indie Campers allows ferries; you book them yourself.
- Touring Cars says you can book ferries without the number plate.
- McRent's Norwegian terms don't mention ferries. Ask before you travel.
One thing that affects cost: on Norway's domestic ferries you pay by measured total length – including the bike rack. A few centimetres can push you into the next price group.
How length-based ferry fares work, and how to prepay them, is explained step by step in our guide Norway tolls and ferries explained.
Tolls: how rental companies charge AutoPASS
You can't pay at a Norwegian toll point: cameras read the number plate, and a tag is read if one is fitted.
What you pay depends on the company:
- McRent: a compulsory "Mautgebühren (AutoPASS)" flat fee of NOK 139 per day at all four depots (according to the depot data on mcrent.de).
- roadsurfer: Norwegian vans carry a toll transponder as a free extra. roadsurfer lists a handling fee of €35 or NOK 410 for tolls and fines.
- Indie Campers: you register the vehicle at autopass.no at pick-up. Tolls are not included; the fee list adds a €15 "Toll Identification Fee" and a €50 "Handling Fee" for processing tolls or fines.
- Touring Cars: AutoPASS is included, and tolls are settled when you return the van.
Extras and hidden costs
The daily rate is rarely the final price. Include these when you compare:
- Service fee: McRent NOK 1,950 per rental. Touring Cars charges a "base fee" covering cleaning, preparation and the airport transfer; the amount isn't published. roadsurfer mentions a booking fee and a trip-preparation fee, also without public amounts.
- Equipment: at McRent, bedding costs NOK 560 per person, the kitchen set NOK 380 and the camping set NOK 430 per rental; the bike rack is free (not for e-bikes). At roadsurfer the kitchen box is from €15 and bedding from €39 per trip, the bike rack from €7 per night. At Touring Cars, bedding is not included.
- Dogs: roadsurfer from €139 flat; Indie Campers allows one pet up to 30 kg with a cleaning fee (€125); McRent allows no dogs in Norway.
- Cleaning and toilet: Indie Campers charges €200 for an unemptied toilet cassette, €150 for waste water and €100 for interior cleaning. roadsurfer lists €150 for toilet cassettes with excrement in them. At McRent you return the van with a basic interior clean and an empty cassette, or a cleaning fee from the price list applies. McRent Oslo has a dump station at the depot; Indie's depots have none.
- Reducing the excess: McRent cuts it to NOK 9,000 (first claim) for NOK 120 per day. roadsurfer offers Plus (€800) and Max (€150); prices depend on the booking country and aren't public. Touring Cars: TC Plus NOK 15,000, TC Premium NOK 8,000.
On top of that come tolls, ferries and campsites. Where you may legally spend the night with a camper – and where not – is in our guide Where to sleep with a camper in Norway.
How much does it cost to rent a camper in Norway?
Public price examples as of 24 September 2026:
- roadsurfer Oslo/Bergen: from €65 per night (Couple Cottage), €69 (Road House), €79 (Camper Castle), fees excluded.
- McRent Oslo, last-minute Comfort Plus from 5 to 15 October 2026: NOK 13,102.80 instead of NOK 14,342. Rentals of 21+ days get 5% off, 31+ days 8%.
- Touring Cars gives "sample rates for one week in 2025" of NOK 11,550 from Oslo and NOK 13,300 from Tromsø.
Motorhome Republic shows how much the season matters: its average price for a two-berth camper is NOK 2,235 in January, NOK 2,487 in April, NOK 3,825 in July and NOK 2,496 in October – without saying what period the figure covers.
Renting at home and driving to Norway
With private rentals, everything hinges on the insurance. Goboony's daily insurance for German vehicles is valid in the EU, the EFTA countries (Norway is one) and the UK, but only for motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes handed over in Germany; it costs from €19.36 a day. Goboony's deposit is €2,000 in Germany and €1,250 in the Netherlands. PaulCamper's Allianz fleet policy is valid across Europe, but owners can restrict the travel area. Neither Goboony nor PaulCamper says anything public about ferry damage – ask the owner.
You'll find privately owned campers in Germany and the Netherlands on Goboony, for example.
How to compare offers properly
Compare the trip total, not the daily rate:
- Rent for all nights plus the service or base fee
- Toll flat fee or handling fee × days
- The price of reducing the excess to a level you can live with
- Extras: bedding, kitchen, bike rack, dog, winter service
- Mileage rule: unlimited or capped?
- One-way fee, if you don't return to your start
Pick-up checklist
- Credit card for the deposit (McRent: Mastercard or Visa only, no prepaid cards, no cash)
- Check your licence: does your category match the maximum authorised mass in the registration document?
- Photograph existing damage inside and out, including awning and roof
- Look at the tyres: tread depth and symbol (snowflake or M+S) – especially from October
- Clarify tolls: is there a tag on board, and how are tolls charged?
- Note the total length with the bike rack – you'll need it for ferries
- Gas bottles: how many, how full? (McRent: one full, one in use)
- Toilet cassette and waste water: where will you empty them before returning?
