Finnskogen — the forest with its own republic
Forest Finn farms, a thirteen-stage border trail, wolves, and a village that declares independence every July.

The mountains of eastern Norway are the country's high interior — Jotunheimen, Rondane, Dovrefjell. Fewer fjords, more sky, and roads that climb above the tree line.
Eastern Norway reaches from Oslo and the forests of the south-east up through the long valleys of Gudbrandsdalen and Østerdalen to the high mountains. Jotunheimen holds Norway's highest peaks. Rondane was the country's first national park. Dovrefjell is home to wild musk oxen.
This is walking and hut country. Many drives here are really a way to reach a trailhead, and the Norwegian Trekking Association's huts make multi-day walks possible without carrying a tent. The high mountain season is short. Snow can linger on the paths well into June.
