Norway destinations: regions, fjords and scenic routes

Norway is long. Choosing the right part for your season matters more than any single viewpoint.

Regions

Northern Norway

Above the Arctic Circle the distances get longer, the roads get emptier and the light stops behaving. In summer it never gets dark; in winter it barely gets light, and the sky does something else instead.

Best for road trips
Late May to early September

Central Norway — Trøndelag

Trøndelag is where most road trips hurry through on the way north. It deserves better. There is a proper city in Trondheim, a long, quiet coastline and mountain country where a small hut may be the only building for kilometres.

Best for road trips
June to September
Character
Farmland, coast and open mountain plateaus

    Southern Norway

The south is Norway's summer holiday coast: white wooden towns, warm skerries and islands, the lighthouse at Lindesnes at the southern tip, and the quiet valleys behind them.

    Best for road trips
June to August, and a mild spring and autumn
    Character
Skerries, small towns, beaches and valleys
