A quiet coastal road curving along a calm bay in Norway

Southern Norway

The south is Norway's summer holiday coast: white wooden towns, warm skerries and islands, the lighthouse at Lindesnes at the southern tip, and the quiet valleys behind them.

Southern Norway — Sørlandet and the neighbouring coast — is gentler than the rest of the country. The sea is warmer, the rocks are smooth, and the small white towns such as Lillesand, Grimstad and Risør fill up with Norwegian holidaymakers in July.

Beyond the coast

Inland, the valley of Setesdal runs north towards the mountains, with old farms and a road that climbs to the high plateaus. Lindesnes lighthouse marks the southern tip of mainland Norway, and is the traditional start — or end — of an end-to-end trip.
