How do you do Lofoten with a camper or car?

Ferry from Bodø or the E10 by road, where motorhomes may not park at night, trailhead parking at Reine and Kvalvika, and which season suits a camper.

The short answer (status: October 2026): you reach Lofoten either by the Bodø–Moskenes car ferry or by road on the E10, which runs all the way to Å without a ferry. Lofoten has no general camper ban. Motorhomes may not park at night at twelve named car parks, some E10 rest areas got two- and four-hour limits in 2025, and the big trailheads fill early. With a plan for each night, Lofoten works well by camper and saves you the expensive surprises.

Getting there: the ferry from Bodø

The classic way in is the car ferry from Bodø to Moskenes, near Å at the southern tip. It is run by Torghatten Nord as route 18-782. Some sailings go via Værøy and Røst, so pick a direct one. In the summer 2026 timetable, direct sailings took 3 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes. From 7 September the winter timetable applies.

Booking is not compulsory, but on this route it is worth it in summer. Torghatten calls it a route with "very high load" in the high season. Travellers to Værøy and Røst get priority, and up to 50 % of the capacity can be booked for Bodø–Moskenes. The booking deadline is 20:00 the day before, the reservation costs extra (NOK 130–400 for a vehicle, depending on length), and you must be in the lane signed "Reservert" 45 minutes before departure.

The fare depends on length, bike rack included. In 2026 a vehicle up to 6 m pays NOK 605 at full price, 6.01–8 m pays NOK 1,302, and 8.01–10 m pays NOK 1,677. A tag and an AutoPASS for ferry agreement reduce that. How that works for a foreign vehicle is explained in How do you pay Norway's tolls with a foreign car or camper?.

Getting there by road: the E10

You do not need a ferry at all. From Narvik, the E10 leaves the E6 and continues on land to Svolvær and on to Å. Measured with OSRM on OpenStreetMap data, Narvik to Svolvær is about 222 km (about 3 h 40 min free-flow) and Svolvær to Å another 129 km (about 2 h 20 min). Treat those times as a floor: in summer, and with a camper, you will be slower.

Two ferries offer shortcuts:

  • Bognes–Lødingen (route 18-703) crosses from the E6 to Lødingen. From there it is about 110 km by road to Svolvær. The winter timetable from 1 September 2026 to 31 May 2027 runs roughly every hour by day. Ticketing is by number-plate recognition, and foreign vehicles without an AutoPASS agreement must register at ferrypay.no.
  • Melbu–Fiskebøl (route 18-732) links Vesterålen with the northern end of Lofoten. It is a natural way to combine both regions.

A practical loop: in by road on the E10, out by the ferry from Moskenes to Bodø (or the other way round). That way you never drive the same stretch twice.

Where overnighting is restricted

Three layers of rules apply, and the sign on site always wins.

1. The Lofoten outdoor regulation. Between 24:00 and 06:00 you may not park a caravan or motorhome at twelve named car parks. In Vågan these are Stranda under fjellet, Kalle, Rørvika and along Lille Kongsvatn. The other eight are on Værøy: Vika, Marka, Sørlandshagen, Skaret, Skiphalsen, Teisthammarn, Nevan and Skarsvollsand. The same regulation bans tents in named places in Vågan and Moskenes from 1 May to 1 October, including Reine and Reinebringen, and at Haukland in Vestvågøy all year.

2. Time limits on E10 rest areas. In July 2025, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration introduced two- or four-hour parking limits at eight to nine rest areas along the E10 in Lofoten, as a pilot. The reason it gave: one night in August the year before, 365 motorhomes were counted along the E10 between Reine and Kabelvåg, while the campsites had room. The press release does not name the rest areas, and whether the pilot continued in 2026 is unknown. Read the sign.

The road authority also says, for all of Norway, that ferry terminals and rest areas are not intended for overnight stays, and that you should follow signs and markings to avoid fines or towing.

3. Municipal parking rules. The whole of Reine, from Reinehalsen to Reinehalsen, is a no-parking zone, except where signs allow it. Moskenes names Gamle Reine skole, Reine sentrum and Reine ytre havn as the places to park. Vågan runs one municipal motorhome car park, on Engøya outside Henningsvær, at NOK 28 an hour and at most NOK 550 a day. For other motorhome parking the municipality refers to private providers.

The general Norwegian rules for parking overnight beside a road still apply in between. They are explained in Can you park a campervan overnight in Norway?.

Parking at the trailheads

The two most famous hikes in the south of Lofoten have their own parking rules:

  • Reinebringen starts at the car park at Reine ytre havn, signed "P Reinebringen". It is 6.1 km return with 508 m of ascent, about 2.5 hours, season May to September, and not a winter hike. Tenting is not allowed on Reinebringen or in the area around it. Moskenes publishes its 2026 rates there excluding VAT: NOK 36 an hour from 07:00 to 23:00, NOK 10 an hour at night, at most NOK 499 per 24 hours, with the first 30 minutes free. In Reine sentrum it is NOK 44 an hour, for at most 2 hours.
  • Ryten and Kvalvika in Lofotodden National Park: the main car park is at Fredvang skole, with paid parking and the largest capacity. Innersand is privately run and has toilets. Torsfjorden is a small rest area best suited to cyclists. The national park says both fill quickly in high season, so come early. The trail page on ut.no says parking at Torsfjorden and along the road to it is not permitted.

Toilets and dump stations

Emptying motorhome and caravan toilets in the scenic-route toilets is not permitted. The scenic route lists dump stations at Reine, Hamnøy, Ramberg, Leknes, Lyngvær, Svolvær, Austnesfjorden and Torvdalshalsen.

Season: when a camper works best

The Lofoten scenic route is 230 km of the E10 between Raftsundet and Å, and it is open all year. For a camper, summer is the easy season: long days, the trails open, and the ferry busy. June and September have very different strengths, compared in Lofoten in June or September?.

Winter is possible, but it is a different trip. In Nordland, tyres must have at least 3 mm of tread from 16 October to 30 April, and studded tyres are allowed in the same period. More on winter tyres and chains is in Renting a camper in Norway, and on chasing the aurora in Northern lights on a Norway road trip.

FAQ

Do I need to book the Bodø–Moskenes ferry?

It is not compulsory, but in summer it is wise. Booking closes at 20:00 the day before, costs extra, and you must be in the "Reservert" lane 45 minutes before departure.

Can I drive to Lofoten without a ferry?

Yes. The E10 from Narvik reaches Svolvær and Å by road, about 351 km from Narvik to Å as measured with OSRM.

Are motorhomes banned in Lofoten?

No. The Lofoten regulation bans motorhomes from parking between 24:00 and 06:00 at twelve named car parks. Rest areas, towns like Reine and trailheads can have their own signs, and those apply.

Where can I empty the toilet in Lofoten?

At dump stations. The scenic route lists them at Reine, Hamnøy, Ramberg, Leknes, Lyngvær, Svolvær, Austnesfjorden and Torvdalshalsen.
