What is the best Norway road trip itinerary for 2 weeks?
Two weeks covers one region done properly, not all of Norway. Three route options, the months the mountain passes open, and which ferries to book.

The short answer (status: October 2026): two weeks is enough for one region done well, either the western fjords or Lofoten and Vesterålen, but not for the whole country. Plan for mid-June to early September. The high mountain roads have opened anywhere between April and late June in past years, and some close again from mid-September.
The options at a glance
| Option | Core route | Ferries | Fits two weeks if… |
|---|---|---|---|
| A — Western fjords | Bergen → Sognefjord → Geiranger → Trollstigen → Atlantic Road, about 840 km | 3 road ferries, no booking | you add arrival days and a buffer for weather |
| B — Lofoten & Vesterålen | Bodø ferry → Reine → Svolvær → Vesterålen, about 460 km | Bodø–Moskenes (bookable) plus short crossings | you fly in, or add the drive north |
| C — Both | A plus B | all of the above | you fly between them. By road it is a rush |
The kilometre figures are rounded planning distances from our guides, not measurements from an official register. Your figure will change with where you sleep and which detours you take.
Option A: the western fjords
This is the classic first Norway trip. The route runs from Bergen via Voss and Flåm to the Sognefjord, over Sognefjellet to Lom, on to Geiranger, over Trollstigen to Åndalsnes, and ends on the Atlantic Road at Kristiansund. The three car ferries on it (Mannheller–Fodnes, Eidsdal–Linge and Åfarnes–Sølsnes) are all part of the AutoPASS tag system. You drive on without a booking.
Over two weeks, that leaves time for the ferry from Germany or Denmark and for a rainy day or two. Bergen is a wet city. Its normal precipitation is 132 mm in June, 158 mm in July and 208 mm in August.

Option B: Lofoten and Vesterålen
The scenic route through Lofoten is 230 km of the E10 between Raftsundet and Å. That is short, but you will stop constantly.
The classic way in is the Bodø–Moskenes car ferry. It is one of the few Norwegian ferries you can book. Booking costs extra, and you must be in the "Reservert" lane 45 minutes before departure. Torghatten's route page gives the booking deadline as 20:00 the day before.
Length matters on this crossing. In 2026, a vehicle up to 6 m pays NOK 605 at full price, and one of 6.01–8 m pays NOK 1,302.
Whether to go in June or September is covered in our article Lofoten in June or September?. There is more on the region on our Lofoten page.
Option C: both in 14 days
On paper it works. In practice the two regions are far apart, and a combined trip either loses several days to driving or needs a flight in between. Our guides treat them as two separate trips. With only 14 days, choose one and do it well.
When the mountain roads open
The famous passes are closed in winter, and the opening date moves by weeks from year to year:
| Pass | Opened in 2026 | Earlier openings |
|---|---|---|
| Sognefjellet (Fv. 55) | 2 April | 12 April – 1 May |
| Trollstigen (Fv. 63) | 27 April (county) / 29 April (scenic-route page) | 29 April – 12 June |
| Aurlandsfjellet (Fv. 5627) | 1 June | 7 May – 3 June |
| Gamle Strynefjellsvegen (Fv. 258) | unknown | 15 May – 29 June |
Even after opening, these roads may close at night and in bad weather. Trollstigen also closes for works. In autumn 2026 it was shut on weekdays from 07:00 to 18:00 for rockfall protection. Check the day before you drive, on yr.no or with the road authority.
On Gamle Strynefjellsvegen, vehicles over 8 metres long with an axle load over 8 tonnes are banned between Grotli and the Vestland county boundary.
Late in the year: from 16 November 2026, the Lærdal Tunnel on the E16 closes at night from 18:00 to 06:00 for upgrade works. This is planned to continue for two years, with the tunnel open on the night to Sunday.
Which months work
- May: good value, but some passes may still be closed. You need a plan B.
- Second half of June: going by past opening dates, this is when all the big passes have most often been open, just before the July peak.
- July: everything is open and everything is full. Book beds in Geiranger, Flåm and Åndalsnes early.
- August: wetter on the west coast, with similar temperatures.
- September: quieter. Gamle Strynefjellsvegen has closed for the winter as early as 15 September in past years.
What this article leaves out
This page gives you the shape of the trip. The detailed planning is in our two route guides:
- Western fjords: 10-day road trip: day-by-day stages with driving times, the three ferries and their fares, and camper limits on each pass.
- Lofoten & Vesterålen: 7-day route: ferry timetables, tunnel heights, parking costs and a rain plan for every day.
FAQ
Is two weeks enough for Norway?
It is enough for one region, done properly. Our north-to-south route through the whole country is planned for 21 days.
When is the best time for a Norway road trip?
Mid-June to early September. Before that, high mountain roads may still be closed. After it, the first passes close.
Do I need to book ferries in Norway?
Usually not. Most road ferries cannot be booked, and you simply drive on. Bodø–Moskenes is an exception, and booking there is optional but advisable in summer.
